What's a SERP?

The short answer

SERP stands for search engine results page, the page you see after you search. Today it includes much more than ten blue links: ads, the local map pack, AI Overviews, videos, and “People also ask” boxes all compete for attention at the top of the page.

What shows up on a SERP

  • Paid ads, usually at the very top
  • AI Overviews that summarize an answer
  • The map pack, showing nearby businesses
  • Featured snippets and “People also ask” questions
  • Regular website results, often called organic results
  • Videos, images, and reviews

Why it matters for your business

Each of those spots is a different way to be found. Looking at what appears for your most important searches tells you where to focus: your Google Business Profile, a page that answers the question, an ad, or all three.

Try this

Search the three phrases your customers use most. Write down what appears above the first regular website result. That's the real competition for their attention.

The bottom line

Ranking is no longer just about being first in the list. It's about showing up in the right spot for the right search.
