The difference in plain terms
Automation sends the email, posts the ad, runs the workflow. It never stops to ask whether that's the right move today. Intelligence asks a different question: given everything happening right now, what actually moves us toward the goal? Sometimes the answer is shift the budget, change the creative, or skip the send entirely.
Why this matters more than it sounds
When AI tools showed up, most teams pointed them at the work they were already doing. Same process, same assumptions, ten times the output. If the thinking underneath was off, all you bought was the ability to be wrong faster and at a bigger scale.
How to audit what you're running
Take one tool or workflow at a time and ask a single question: does this make a decision based on what's happening right now, or does it fire the same way every time?
- Runs on a schedule with no inputs? That's automation.
- Sends the same message to everyone regardless of behavior? Automation.
- Checks results and changes what happens next? Now you're getting somewhere.
Automation isn't bad. Invoices, reminders, and reports should run themselves. Just don't mistake it for judgment.
The bottom line
Speed is not a strategy. Before you add another tool, look at what the current ones are actually deciding. If the answer is nothing, that's worth knowing.
